New podcast alert! And surprise; it isn’t true crime related.
“Whimsically Volatile” is a podcast hosted by one of my favorite drag queens, Katya Zamolodchikova (Brian McCook) and Craig MacNeil, his longtime friend from Boston as well as director, producer, DJ, etc. I discovered Katya not from RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7 or All Stars 2, which made her a relatively household name (depending where you live). No, it was actually from her web series “UNHhhh”, in which she co-starred with my other favorite drag queen and most recent RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3 winner, Trixie Mattel. “UNHhhh” is totally free and available on YouTube and I can’t recommend it enough. They are two of the funniest people on the planet and their banter is too much, honey!
A little background on this podcast. Katya suddenly quit drag late last year in the middle of her new Viceland show, “Trixie & Katya”, airing and filming. Bob the Drag Queen has filled in for her as a guest, and she is hysterical, but I was definitely confused, worried and sad because I’m a huge fan of Katya. In the first episode of the podcast, Katya divulges the fact that she relapsed on drugs, had a psychotic break and a heart attack that prompted her to go to rehab. Obviously, this is all very scary, but what a relief to know what the heck was going on.
As you can probably glean, Katya is extremely open and candid about her substance abuse problems and addictive personality. This is one of the most endearing attributes of her personality. She is totally crazy, hyperactive, and kooky. She is also extremely intelligent. She’s often called the “thinking man’s drag queen”. If you do listen, you’ll notice amongst her wheezing laughter, strange voice characters, and TMI about her sex life that she has a very large capacity for knowledge, she’s multilingual, and she has a desire to understand herself and others to a very enlightened extent.
It’s refreshing to have someone put it all out there and live their life in a brutally honest way. She may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I find her ruminations extremely interesting. She has a humongous fan base for a reason.
Katya has a larger than life personality and I do think the format of the podcast functions as a platform to share her anecdotes, stories, thoughts, etc. We don’t hear as much about or from Craig. So far though, he is a pleasant counterpoint to Katya. He has a great sense of humor and a judgment free attitude towards Katya. He also has a lovely voice and keeps her on track because boy does she like tangents!
Topics in this podcast range from Katya’s experience as an artist, drag queen, drug addict, boyfriend, son, Bostonian and much more. They have also had very interesting guests so far, including a yoga master (Katya’s teacher) that discusses different forms of practice and Ayurvedic dieting. Another notable guest, Lady Bunny aka the OG drag queen besides RuPaul, makes an appearance and talks politics. It’s all supremely interesting and I’m so excited that it exists.
